    Generally dwarf varieties and slow-growing plants should be easy to grow in planters.

    "Vigorous" plants will tend to use up nutrients in the compost quickly, and outgrow their pots, meaning they need greater attention.

    Saucers under pots in summer will reduce the amount of watering needed, whilst pot feet in winter can help protect against excessive damp and frost damage to pots.
